Student council is a significant part of the school environment, and similar to other schools, the student council of BASIS Independent Manhattan contributes to the school setting. It encourages students to voice their opinions of how the school is run. At least one student from each grade level is elected to be a part of the student council. The council is proctored by Ms. Dickens, the Associate Head of School, and led by the elected president and vice president. The president and vice president represent the student body as a whole. This year, the school-wide election also included a secretary, who was nominated solely by the council in the past. Each class had a smaller election for their class representative. This year, the elections were held on November 5th, during the lunch periods, in the atrium.
Last year, the president and vice president were Hudson and Stella Lin. They helped rearrange the way the atrium is structured, including making the Butterbeans line more efficient, and adding more trash and recycling bins to make cleaning up easier.
This year, there were two president and vice president nominee pairs: Max Steinmetz (11th) and Saira Kakodkar (10th) or Melina Bakos (9th) and Flavia Gourtay (9th). A big congratulations to Max and Saira for winning the election.
The secretary of the student council is in charge of keeping track of the council meetings. They play a vital role in maintaining the organization of the council. Secretaries keep records of meetings and help keep the council on task. The nominees were Kaylee Hu (10th) and Dashiell Sigmond (11th). Congrats to Kaylee for being elected.
In 6Pb, the nominees were Didi Opedal, Mark Nudler, and Alexandra Cheung. The 6Hg nominees were Gabriel Lam, Adrian Jonglez, and Dani Krein. 7Sb had three nominees: Ellora Shah, Yuvraj Patel, and Graham Klayman. The 8Te nominees were Natalie Cheung, Deven Agge, and Rhea Yang. 11Ag nominees were Eli Finkelstein and Andrew Slocum. And finally, 12Og had two nominees: Marcus Persso and Arry Jeejeebhoy. 7P, 8S, 9U, 10Au, and 10Cr each have only one nominee, who ran unopposed. The unopposed nominees were Jayden Shah, Michael Hunter, Niko Ordukhanyan, Desmond Kim, and J.J Switzky, respectively.
Congratulations to Alexandra Cheung, Dani Krein, Yuvraj Patel, Natalie Cheung, Andrew Slocum, and Arry Jeejeebhoy for winning their class’s election.
A final congratulations to all who won positions on the council for this year, we all look forward to seeing what you have in store for us!
